The match
Mexico's path to the knockout round can get a big boost with a victory in front of the home fans in Guadalajara against a Korea Republic side who have become very familiar foes of El Tricolor in recent years. Since their classic meeting at Russia 2018, the two teams have faced off twice in friendlies, including a September 2025 fixture in which they played to a 2-2 draw. The stakes will be much higher in this one, as Mexico get ready to play a World Cup match in Guadalajara for the first time.
Previous World Cup meetings
Mexico and Korea Republic have locked horns twice before in the FIFA World Cup™, the first coming in the group stage at France 1998. The Koreans were on the hunt for a first World Cup victory and appeared poised to get it done with a 1-0 lead at half-time thanks to a goal from Ha Seokju, only for Mexico to storm back in the second half on a goal from Ricardo Pelaez and a brilliant brace from Luis Hernandez for a 3-1 triumph.
Twenty years later in Russia, they met again and fresh off their emphatic opening win over Germany, Mexico raced to a two-goal advantage through Carlos Vela and Javier Hernandez. Son Heungmin pulled one back late on, but the spoils belonged to El Tricolor in a 2-1 final.

Guadalajara Stadium
Built on raised ground and with a spherical, coliseum-like design, Guadalajara Stadium is certainly one of the more eye-catching venues set to hold matches at the FIFA World Cup in 2026. Inaugurated in 2010, the stadium is home during the regular season to C.D. Guadalajara, who have enjoyed their fair share of success there. The men’s team secured their historic double title campaign, league and cup of the Clausura 2017 tournament, and the 2018 Concacaf Champions League victory, while the two titles of the women’s team in 2017 and 2022 add to the trophy haul. Guadalajara Stadium was one of the main venues for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2011 and hosted the Pan-American Games the same year.
