Algeria v Austria
Group J
Saturday, 27 June | Kansas City Stadium
Kick-off time
21:00 (Kansas City) | Saturday 03:00 (Algiers) | Saturday 04:00 (Vienna)
The match
In a group that contains defending champions Argentina, both Algeria and Austria will be looking to ensure their places in the knockout stages when they meet in Kansas City. The Fennecs will be after revenge after Austria qualified for the second group stage at the 1982 FIFA World Cup Spain™ at their expense. Algeria are aiming to make it past the opening round for the first time since Brazil 2014 — their last appearance at the global finals — while Austria will be looking to repeat their efforts from Spain 1982.
Should one of these sides top the group, they would meet the Group H runner-up at Miami Stadium on 3 July. The group runner-up would meet the Group H winner at Los Angeles Stadium on 2 July, while the third-place finisher could potentially face the winner of Group B, D, G, K, or L.
Previous World Cup meetings
Both sides were on a high when they met in Oviedo in the group stage at Spain 1982, with Algeria and Austria having recorded opening victories against West Germany and Chile, respectively. Algeria's joy in defeating the masterful Germans was short-lived, however, as they were dispatched 2-0 by a more experienced Austria side thanks to goals from Walter Schachner and Hans Krankl. Algeria looked on course to reach the knockout stages following a 3-2 victory over Chile in their final fixture, but were knocked out after West Germany's 1-0 win over Austria in Gijon, with the European neighbours progressing at the Fennecs' expense.
